Ever since 9/11, security has been a major concern for governmental agencies and corporations alike. Telecom networks are particularly vulnerable to not only fraud and hacker attacks, but can also become the target of terrorism. Call accounting is a tool that may be used to combat these threats.

As is often the case with new technologies, the creative efforts of the innovators become the target of those who seek to destroy them. Most of us are aware of the threats posed to Internet communications, such as viruses and other malicious intrusions, and have taken protective measures with firewall and virus checking software. However, voice communications face similar risks and generally are not as well-protected. Yet, who would want their telephone network crippled in times of crisis, or worse being taken over by terrorists?

The FBI is aware of the telecom threats, but enterprises need to take their own measures to protect themselves. The traditional switched networks are subject to attacks, but the new VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology provides a whole new set of security challenges.

A good start to making your telecom network more secure is by installing a call accounting system. Call accounting software uses Call Detail Records (CDRs) to provide information about where a call originated, its destination, the date, time and duration, etc.

The call accounting software issues periodic reports about who used the telephone network and when, which can quickly show up any unusual activity and permit timely corrective measures. The system can even be set up to issue alarms when it detects any suspicious activity. It can detect calls of abnormal duration (too long or too short), wrong calling station, wrong destination, wrong time of day, etc.

Having a reliable call accounting system in place will not only provide improved security, it routinely saves the company money, because it provides a phone bill tracking mechanism and thus helps to prevent over billing by telecom carriers. This is all part of Telecom Expense Management (TEM).

In addition to providing reports and security alerts, a good call accounting system should be able to operate with the traditional switched telephone networks, as well as with the newer VoIP technology.

2. Mix until all particles of the salt are covered or scented. Cut the cellophane paper into six inch squares. Using a ladle or spoon, place a heap of the scented salts in the middle of the squares.

3. Gather the edges of the cellophane together and tie a length of colored ribbon around the bag' to hold the scented bath salts in.

4. Next, cut the pieces of parchment paper into four equal squares. In your prettiest handwriting, place the name of the recipient on the paper and write them a small thank you note for joining in your celebration.

Now this guy was telling me that I wont have to go to the TV set. TV will find me in my work at my pc and as I work. Too good a deal not to test. If only to see if it were true. So off I go into the internet searching for the free internet TV on my pc. I try the free sites to access the free online TV and boy what a disappointment. The time it takes me to watch free TV was too much for a half an hour series.

It happens that free TV is now accessed by so many people worldwide, wherever there is internet that the servers can no longer cope. Due to so many requests for free internet TV, the servers are unable to process the requests in time and the result is that no one gets to watch free TV anymore. Its no longer an option if you ask me. So I go back digging into the internet for something more accessible and at speeds I can stand.

After going through a lot of sales pitches, I almost give up when a light bulb lights up in my head. What if I search from the market point of view. Surely, I'm bound to find a satellite TV for pc software that most marketers are selling. I tried one of the big online merchants called click bank to see if they had any such software that was on the market. Sure enough I found one very popular TV on pc software which to me seemed to be retailing at a ridiculous price. At only $49.95 the PC 2007 Elite edition seemed like a steal. I figured it wasnt too much of a cost if only to get me TV that I could at least watch from my pc.

What was most interesting is that the vendors website even had a miniscreen that I cloud watch latest movie trailers as seen on TV. In addition the free pc TV software only took 2 minutes from download to watching the live TV. The website said that the software could also avail international TV from over 70 countries and I get to watch more than 3000 TV channels across the world. Try that for variety.

I decided to make the download and I was surprised at the speeds and variety of TV channels. In less than 2 minutes my computer had become a full theatre; from sports programs to football series, from educational TV channels to shopping guides. I had it all including classic series, to romantic TV soaps and live sports.

The variety also gave me access to TV in many languages that I wondered what it would mean for people living in Europe or USA from other countries. In an instant I had world TV channels in many languages and programs like African, Arabic, Armenian, Asian, Chinese, Farsi, French, German, Greek, Israeli, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, South Asian, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu.

Well, I'm yet to sample the last of the 3000 TV channels six months down the line. I think its was the best money well spent since.

Flowering cherries

While the briefness of their glory has to be acknowledged, cherries really are the hardy spring-flowering trees for temperate climate gardens. I can think of no others, apart from their close Prunus relatives and some of the magnolias that even come close to rivalling flowering cherries for sheer weight of bloom and vibrance of colour.

The genus Prunus, to which the cherries, plums, almonds, apricots and peaches belong, includes around 430 species spread over much of the northern temperate regions and has a toehold in South America. Although including a few evergreen species, such as the well-known cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), the genus is mainly deciduous and generally hardy to the frosts likely to occur in most New Zealand gardens.

The genus Prunus is widely recognised as being divided into 5 or 6 subgenera, though some botanists prefer to recognise these as distinct genera. The subgenus cerasus is the one to which the cherries belong. This group includes a wide variety of species, many of which are not highly ornamental. The species which are of most interest to gardeners are the Chinese and Japanese cherries, not only because they tend to be the most attractive, but also because they tend to be reasonably compact, often have attractive autumn foliage as well as spring flowers and because centuries of development in oriental gardens have produced countless beautiful cultivars.

The Japanese recognise two main groups of flowering cherries: the mountain cherries or yamazakura and the temple or garden cherries, the satozakura. The mountain cherries, which tend to have simple flowers, are largely derived from the original Mountain Cherry (Prunus serrulata var. spontanea), Prunus subhirtella and Prunus incisa. They are mainly cultivated for their early-blooming habit, which is just as well because their rather delicate display would be overwhelmed by the flamboyance of the garden cherries.

The garden cherries are the result of much hybridisation, mostly unrecorded, so we can't be exactly sure of their origins. Prunus serrulata (in its lowland form) and Prunus subhirtella also feature largely in their background. The other major influences are Prunus sargentii, Prunus speciosa, Prunus apetala and possibly the widespread Bird Cherries (Prunus avium and Prunus padus). The result of these old hybrids and modern developments is the wealth of forms that burst into bloom in our gardens every spring.

Regretfully, that complex parentage and those centuries of development and countless cultivars combined with Western misunderstandings of Japanese names and multiple introductions of the same plants under different names has led to considerable confusion with the names of flowering cherries.

Most of the popular garden plants are lumped together under three general headings:

1. Prunus subhirtella cultivars and hybrids;

2. Sato-zakura hybrids;

3. Hybrids no longer listed under parent species, being instead regarded as just to difficult to classify in that way.

But however you view them, flowering cherries have so much to offer that a little confusion over naming and identification shouldn't stand in the way of your including them in your garden. And now that many of them are available as container-grown plants that can be bought in flower, it's really just a matter of choosing the flowers you like.

Nevertheless, it's nice to know exactly which plant you're dealing with, so that you can be sure of its performance and size. While most of the larger nurseries and garden centres take care to supply plants that are true to type, make sure on first flowering that your cherries match their label descriptions. Misidentification, or perhaps misrepresentation, is common.

Plants

Prunus subhirtella cultivars and hybrids

Although the flowers of Prunus subhirtella are usually small and fairly simple, they appear from early winter well into spring, depending on the cultivar. Not only that, the cultivars themselves are long-flowering, often being in bloom for three weeks to a month. There are many cultivars, but most are similar to, or forms of the two main types listed below.

'Autumnalis' ( 'Jugatsu Sakura')

This is the most reliable winter-flowering form. It often starts to bloom in late April to early May and can carry flowers right through until mid September. It seldom produces a massive burst of bloom, rather sporadic clusters of flowers. This is just as well because the flowers are damaged by heavy frosts. The flowers of 'Autumnalis' are white to pale pink opening from pink buds; those of 'Autumnalis Rosea' are the same but with a deep pink centre.

'Pendula' ('Ito Sakura')

Prunus autumnalis tends to have weeping branches and 'Pendula' is a cultivar that emphasises this feature. Its flowers are usually pale pink and open in late winter to early spring. 'Falling Snow' is a cultivar with pure white flowers, while those of 'Rosea' are deep pink.

Sato-zakura hybrids

'Fugenzo' ( 'Shirofugen' )

'Fugenzo' was one of the first, if not the first, Japanese cherry to be grown in European gardens. It 's origins can be traced back to at least the 15th century. Its flowers are white to very pale pink, opening from pink buds, and when fully open how two conspicuous green leaf-like pistils in the centre of the flower.

'Taihaku'

'Taihaku' , also known as the great white cherry, has white flowers up to 5cm across. It grows to at least 8m tall with a wider spread and its flowers open at the same time as its bronze foliage expands, making a pleasant contrast. Thought to have been lost to cultivation, this cultivar was identified in Sussex garden from an old Japanese print.

'Ukon'

Although 'Ukon' mean yellowish, this cultivar has very distinctive pale green flowers and is one of the few unmistakable cherries. Its foliage develops purplish tones in autumn. The unusual flower colour contrasts well with the likes of 'Sekiyama'.

'Amanogawa' ('Erecta')

'Amanogawa' grows to around 6m tall, but only around 1.5m wide, and has pale pink single flowers with a freesia-like scent. It blooms in mid-spring and in autumn the foliage develops striking yellow and red tones.

'Shogetsu' ('Shugetsu', 'Shimidsu-zakura')

'Shogetsu' flowers late and produces pendant clusters of white, double flowers that open from pink buds. The flower clusters are up to 15cm long, which makes a tree in full bloom an arresting sight, especially considering that 'Shogetsu' is not a large tree and that its weeping habit means it can be covered in bloom right down to the ground.

'Sekiyama' ('Kanzan')

Certainly among the most popular cherries and most often sold under the name 'Kanzan', 'Sekiyama' has a relatively narrow, upright growth habit when young but eventually develops into a spreading 12m tall tree. Its flowers, which are pink and very fully double, are carried in pendulous clusters of five blooms. They open from reddish-pink buds. The foliage has a slight red tint.

'Ariake' ('Dawn', 'Candida')

This cultivar grows to about 6m tall and flowers in spring as the foliage develops. The young leaves are a deep bronze shade that contrasts well with white to very pale pink flowers.

'Kiku-shidare' ('Shidare Sakura')

'Kiku-shidare' is similar in flower to 'Sekiyama', but it has a weeping growth habit. It is a small tree and is often smothered in bloom from the topmost branches down to near ground level. The flowers can each have up to 50 petals.

'Pink Perfection'

'Pink Perfection' was introduced in 1935 by the famous English nursery Waterer Sonsand Crisp. It is a probable 'Sekiyama' 'Shogetsu' hybrid and has flowers that show characteristics of both parents; the clustered blooms of 'Shogetsu' and the pink of 'Sekiyama'. The flowers are very fully double and the young foliage is coppery.

'Kofugen'

'Kofugen' has graceful semi-weeping branches and a fairly compact growth habit. Its flowers are not really single but semi-double, though the two whorls of petals are flat rather than ruffled, so the effect is not that easy to see.

'Shirotae' ('Mt. Fuji')

This beautiful tree has a spreading growth habit that in the best specimens shows distinctly tiered branches. Its flowers, which are white and semi-double on mature plants, start to open before the foliage expands. They are pleasantly scented.

'Takasago'

Although possibly a Prunus sieboldii cultivar, 'Takasago' is now more widely listed under the satozakura cherries. It bears clusters of semi-double pink flowers with bronze-red new foliage.

'Ojochin' ('Senriko')

This tree, rather squat when young, but eventually 7m tall bears single white flowers in such profusion as to give the impression of double blooms. Opening from pink buds, the flowers are up to 5cm in diameter and among the later to bloom. 'Ojochin' means large lantern, which aptly describes the shape of the flowers.

Other hybrids, species and their cultivars

'Accolade'

One of the most popular of all garden cherries, 'Accolade' is a Prunus sargentii Prunus subhirtella hybrid that develops into a flat-topped small tree. In spring it is smothered in pendulous clusters of large, bright pink, semi-double flowers.

Yoshino cherry (Prunus yedoensis)

Well-known as an avenue tree, this Prunus subhirtella Prunus speciosa hybrid is smothered in white to very pale pink blooms in spring before or as the new leaves develop. When the flowers are spent they form drifts of fallen petals around the base of the tree. There are several cultivars, such as the pink-flowered 'Akebono', the pale pink 'Awanui' and a weeping form ('Shidare Yoshino' or 'Pendula').

Taiwan cherry (Prunus campanulata)

The Taiwan cherry is valued for its early-flowering habit and fiery autumn foliage. The flowers, which are usually a vivid deep pink, are heavy with nectar and very popular with birds. Taiwan cherry is rather frost tender, though once established it grows well in most coastal areas.

'Okame'

Introduced in 1947 by the British authority Collingwood Ingram, 'Okame' is a hybrid between the Taiwan cherry and the Fuji cherry (Prunus incisa). It is usually quite hardy, though this appears to be variable, and it flowers heavily in early spring. The blooms open in late winter to early spring before the foliage develops and are a bright soft pink. 'Pink Cloud' is a similar though more compact cherry raised by Felix Jury.

Himalayan hill cherry (Prunus cerasoides)

This species is rather frost tender, especially when young, but is a beautiful tree where it grows well. Not only does it produce pink flowers in winter, when little else is in bloom, it has attractive banded bark and the unusual habit of shedding its foliage in late summer then producing new leaves before winter. The variety rubea has deeper pink flowers in spring.

Cyclamen cherry (Prunus cyclamina)

Flowering on bare stems in early spring, the cyclamen cherry is a hardy small to medium-sized tree from central China. The flowers, which are rose pink, are followed by bronze new growth that retains its colour for some weeks before greening. The leaves fall late in autumn and often colour well.

Sargent's cherry (Prunus sargentii)

This large and very hardy Japanese species is probably best known as one of the parents of the very popular hybrid 'Accolade'. It can grow to as much as 18m tall and will withstand at least -25C. Its 3 to4cm wide, bright pink flowers are complemented by red-brown bark.

Kurile cherry (Prunus nipponica var. kurilensis)

Usually little more than a large shrub, this Japanese cherry can reach 6m tall under ideal conditions. The flowers, which are soft pink and open from early spring, are backed by red sepals that hang on for a while after the flowers have fallen, thus prolonging the spring colour.

Prunus sieboldii

This hybrid has given rise to several popular cultivars. The original cross is a slow-growing small tree with semi-double 3 to 4.5cm wide flowers in spring. The new stems are often very glossy.

Cultivation

Flowering cherries are largely undemanding plants that thrive in almost any well-drained soil. For the best display of flowers they need to see at least half-day sun and if sheltered from the wind, the blooms and the autumn foliage will last far longer than if exposed to the full blast of the elements.

Cherries are often seen growing as lawn specimens, but they can be planted in shrubberies, borders or small groves. By choosing a selection that flowers in succession, it's possible to have bloom frommid-winter to early summer.

Cherries are natural companions for azaleas and rhododendrons, and can be used to beautiful effect as shade trees for the smaller varieties of these or to shelter a collection of woodland perennials such as primroses and hostas. Japanese maples also blend well with cherries and they can combine to make a brilliant display of autumn foliage.

Pruning

Flowering cherries seldom need major pruning once established. Young trees can be lightly trimmed to develop a pleasing shape and mature plant may be kept compact by tipping the branches, otherwise just remove any vigorous water shoots and suckers that sprout from the rootstock. Make sure that any pruning is done in summer to prevent infecting the trees with silver leaf fungus (Chondrostereum purpureum). Although this disease is present throughout the year, cherries are most resistant to it in summer.

Pests and diseases

Apart from the already mentioned silver leaf, there isn't really very much that goes wrong with flowering cherries that can't be tolerated. Sawfly larvae (peach or pear slug) sometimes cause damage to the foliage, and older plants sometimes suffer from dieback in their older branches, but these are seldom serious problems. The dieback is sometimes the result of Armillaria, so it may be advisable to insert some of the now readily available Trichoderma dowels into the trunks of any older cherries to prevent the problem developing.

Propagation

Virtually all of the fancier flowering cherries sold for garden use are budded or grafted, usually onto Prunus avium stocks. Although few home gardeners attempt them, these processes are not difficult. Budding especially, is straightforward and is carried out in exactly the same way as budding roses.

Species, including the standard Prunus avium stock, can be raised from seed or from softwood cuttings taken in spring or early summer. The seed should be removed from the fruit by soaking for few days until all the flesh has fallen away. It is usually best to simulate winter conditions by chilling the seed for a few weeks before sowing.

Graft height

When buying flowering cherries you may be faced with a choice of graft height. Which you choose largely depends on the cultivar and the type of growth best suited to your garden. With weeping cherries choose the highest graft possible (usually 8ft [2.4m]), to allow the maximum length of flowering branch. Upright cultivars like 'Sekiyama' are best grafted near ground level so that their erect habit has a chance to develop properly, while graft height in not that important with bushier trees.

The important thing to remember, particularly with high grafted plants, is that the main stem will not gain much height from the grafting point. The stems of a weeping cultivar may grow up before arching down, thus adding some height, but if you choose too low a graft that won' t make much difference. Low-grafted weeping cherries are, however, ideal for large tubs where they can be kept trimmed to shrub-like proportions.

Not all coffee beans are grown in environments that consist of huge commercial coffee plantations that are located in remote places in far off southern Latin American countries and it is also another common assumption that growing coffee requires plenty of sunshine as well.

There are however different kinds of coffee crops that grow under different conditions and which use different procedures of harvesting. Thus one can think of two different types of coffee that include the shade grown or organic coffee and the traditional coffee that is grown in direct sunlight.

Two Types Of Coffee

These two types of coffees are diametrically opposite as far as their production is concerned. There was a time when coffee was only grown in the shade and it was much like the present day organic coffee that we drink today. It is not usual for most kinds of coffee to grow properly under direct sunlight and grow at their best when under shade.

Thus shade grown coffee or organic coffee are used to benefiting from the falling of leaves that are instrumental in mulching the soil and helping in retaining moisture. Also, such type of coffee, when grown beneath trees means that the trees provide a home to birds and thus are a way of controlling pests.

Till about thirty years ago there was not much fertilizer or pesticides used and thus organic coffee was synonymous with healthy production. Then, in the seventies a number of new varieties of coffee began to appear and new methods of producing coffee became known which meant production of more Coffee beans, slower rate of harvesting and also use of direct sunlight to grow the crops.

Thus, the coming of non-organic coffee meant that farmers began to cut down on trees so that they could make plantation rows and in the United States alone it meant almost two million acres of land being dedicated to both organic as well as non-organic coffee growth. Only those farmers that were too poor to use fertilizers as well as pesticides continued producing organic coffee.

There is little doubt that organic coffee does cost a bit more, but the transition from organic to the sun coffee has also meant that the environment is being sacrificed. With erosion of soil and the depletion of nutrients, more chemical fertilizers are being sprayed into the ground and there has also been the removal of rainforest land just so that non-organic coffee can be grown.

This has led to just a few countries remaining that are still producing organic coffee and these countries include Ethiopia, Panama, El Salvador and Mexico. The bigger producers of coffee such as Costa Rica and Brazil are now producing sun coffee.

In the end, organic coffee does mean a better and cleaner environment that does produce a better coffee as far as health and a clean environment are concerned.

Many people have a plain vanilla greeting, and often you're not even sure if you reached a human being or just a machine. "Hi, you've reached 555-1212. Leave a message." Who am I calling, and why should I care enough to leave a message with you?

"Hi, this is Phil. Leave a message. I'll call you back. Thanks." That's a little bit better. At least I know I called Phil. Does he check his voicemail often? What if this is an emergency? Is there another way to reach Phil?

"Hi, you've reached Phil Gerbyshak. I'm not available to take your call right now, however your call is very important to me. If this call is between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm, please feel free to give me a call at work at 414-555-1212. Otherwise, leave your name, number, a brief message, and your favorite 80s rock bank after the tone, and I'll call you back as soon as I can. Thanks for calling. Make it a great day!" Hey, now that's pretty good. There's another number to reach me at, I let the caller know they're important to me, I injected some humor into the situation (favorite 80s rock bank, favorite 80s baseball/football/basketball player, you use what works for you), and I closed with energy: "Make it a great day!" I'll tell you, most people do leave me a message, most laughing by my request for favorite 80s something or other, and then tell me what they need. Then I call them back as soon as I can with the same energy as I have on my voicemail greeting. After all, who wants to talk to someone plain vanilla boring? Not me!

Energy is the key to your voicemail greeting, so practice having energy. Put some alternative methods of reaching you, and you'll ensure people leave you a message with the information you need to make it a great day!

Stay Cool and Use Less Energy This Summer With a ceiling fan

For most people, owning a vacation home does not always mean it comes equipped with all the amenities and creature comforts of a primary home. Second homes for many are rustic modest summer cabins where the carefree days of summer are enjoyed. In general, this is all that is required but there are exceptions such as temperatures rising into triple digit heights. Taking cover from the noon sun offers no respite if the cabin is not equipped with something as basic as a ceiling fan. I can vouch for this first hand as our mountain home was enjoyable throughout the year, until July. When the thermometer hit 106 degrees, an emergency trip was made to the local lighting store to purchase two ceiling fans.

Choosing the Right ceiling fan for your Needs

Looking online or in your local lighting store youve probably found the choices in fans to be extensive. Whats the difference, you ask? Its a summer home, lets get the cheapest fan possible. Right? Maybe not. You should make sure that the fan youre choosing has enough power, pitch and blade diameter to substantially move the air around the room because thats really all a ceiling fan can do. A fan doesnt actually cool the air, it just creates wind chill that aids in cooling as you perspire.

Top of the line fans will have a 14 15 degree pitch as opposed to a low end fan that has about 10. 12 degrees is adequate. As for blade diameter, for a large room youll want something with at least 52 inches. A really large room may need more and visa versa if the room is smaller.

Last, the power and speed options. Obviously, if youre only using the fan during the summer, then the highest speed the ceiling fan is capable of will be your main focus. But if this is for all season use, a very slow speed is important, too. This allows you to circulate air in the room during the winter months without creating a breeze, to assist in warming the room throughout.

And if you can avoid using AC entirely, youll be happy to know that ceiling fans use about 90% less energy than standard air conditioning, which again, is all you really all need in a summer home.

It is your house. Maybe it was the family home that you inherited, and now you are renting it out. Maybe you purchased it as an investment and plan for it to be a big part of the retirement fund.

And now, you want to rent it out to some people who you think are really nice. They told you a story about what hardships they have gone through and you, being a nice person, want to help them out.

Well, maybe they told you the truth. Maybe. But then, maybe they are people who will tear up your lovely house, cost you thousands of dollars in damage, damage your reputation, and perhaps even drive you into bankruptcy.

Protect yourself. ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS screen your tenants. And NEVER EVER violate tenant screening rules numbers 1 through 10!

Rule number 1: Screen your tenants.

Because it does no good to tell you to screen, without telling you HOW to screen, here is how you screen a tenant.

First, make them fill out an application that asks for, at a minimum, the following:

(1) Full Name;
(2) Social Security Number;
(3) Current Address;
(4) Time at current address;
(5) Current Landlord's name and phone number;
(6) Employer;
(7) Employer's phone number;
(8) Their income;
(9) ALL - that means EVERY - address they have lived at for AT LEAST the last 3 years, with landlord names and numbers, and dates they lived there;
(10) Names of EVERYONE to occupy the rental

The application must also have on it a release permitting you to do a complete background check on the applicants, and all applicants age 18 and over must sign the application.

Then, check the DRIVERS LICENSE or STATE ID of every applicant age 18 or over - NO EXCEPTIONS, NO EXCUSES. When you look at the ID, make sure that the picture matches the person who gave it to you. Then verify that the name on the ID is the same (including middle initial) as the name on the application. For women, this often involves careful questioning. MAKE SURE you have all the last names for the person that you can obtain. The address on the drivers license MUST BE one of the addresses listed on the application. If the Social Security number is on the ID, match it against the one on the app. Finally, compare the signature on the ID to the signature on the application.

Charge the applicants a reasonable fee (typically $30 or $35) per name (nonrefundable) for an application fee. This is not unreasonable; a screening service will charge you at least that much, and if you do it yourself, you will put some time into it. Also, this is your first line of defense; if the applicant has a bad history, they usually won't pay the fee since they know they will lose the money and won't get the place. If they are bad guys, you do not want them anyway.

Then, you should turn it over to a good tenant screening service for evaluation. Make sure they are thorough. If you wish to screen the applicants yourself, here is what you do.

First, go to the local courthouse and search the eviction records to see if they have ever been evicted. If they have been evicted, you need to evaluate why. While you are there, check court records for criminal convictions. Then go to the tax office and pull property records on all addresses listed on the app. Make sure that the owner listed on the app is indeed the current (or previous) owner of the property. Commonly, you can do all of this online. One of the most common scams is to list a friend as a landlord. If you have cause to suspect this might have happened, then check the records to see if the friend has ever been evicted or arrested. You will wind up knowing a lot.

Second, go to the police station, and pull arrest records on them. This will usually be enlightening; many arrests never make it to court. So by looking at these records, you will learn if your applicant is troublesome.

Then, go to the credit bureau and pull their credit report. You can use this to determine whether they are a deadbeat or not. Bad credit is common among tenants; learn to decide WHICH KINDS of bad credit raise red flags. For instance, I tend to ignore medical collections; it is expensive and if you are ill, you have to have the service. I do not consider non-payment of medical bills to necessarily indicate moral turpitude. However, bad checks to grocery stores is a major red flag, and I routinely reject those who get jewelry store credit cards, run 'em up, then default. In my book, that is no different than theft.

Now, get on the phone. Call the present and previous landlords. Get references. Ask set questions; "Did they live there? did they pay on time? did you ever give them an eviction notice? did they cause damage? would you rent to them again?" Never forget the "would you rent to them again?" - often, your other questions do not pick up something and that last one is your clue.

Call the employer. Do they really work there? Is the employer really an employer? Pay particular attention if the phone is answered "hello". Business phones are usually answered with a business greeting; "Doc's morgue - you stab 'em, we slab 'em". The "hello" answer could be your tip off that the "employer" is not really an employer.

If anything makes you in the least bit suspicious, criss-cross phone numbers. You can do this online at many websites.

When you are done with all this, you will know who you are dealing with. It won't guarantee you that you will avoid a bad experience, but if you do not do it you are certain to have some extremely bad experiences, and by doing this you will certainly filter out 99.9% of the bad guys.

A good screening service will do all of these things for you. If you are not set up to do it routinely, you will find it to be a terrible nuisance and will be inclined to take shortcuts. Shortcuts will cost you many thousands of dollars in evictions, lost rent, and repairs. So never take shortcuts.

The screening service that we use maintains eviction, arrest, and property ownership records on site. They also keep complete records of everyone they have ever screened - so the second and third and fifteenth times they screen them they can see what was said the earlier times. They keep records on landlords as well, so they know who they all are (as best they can know - they know of several thousand of them in the area). So when you go to these guys, they have the data to quickly tell you what you need to know about the person, and all the previous landlords, and so forth.

Any good local screening service will have this kind of data - and some of it is only data that you get by running a screening service. This is the argument in favor of using a service rather than doing it yourself.

But ultimately it does not matter, just so long as you do it.

Although Lawrence was not decorated with awards as a young man, he found fame and fortune when he moved to London in 1870, at the age of 34 and changed his name. He would now be at the top of any alphabetical listing of artists. He must have had a great resolve, as he had lost his wife and son and was in the process of raising two small daughters. He met and married again. In 1899, he received a knighthood from Britain and in 1905 received the prestigious Order of Merit for his work in the arts.

His clients were a whose who in European society. They included the British Royal Family, the Russian Imperial Family, the British Prime Minister and the Polish Prime Minister. He is understood to have painted about 400 paintings and about 20% were commissioned portraits.

VOIP is another one of those computer acronyms that stands for Voice Over Internet Protcol. It is a technology that is growing very quickly, and the primary reason for that is that it is helping both residential customers and business customers to save money.

You really do not need to know how VOIP works to use it, but there are some very fundamental things you need to understand. First of all, if you want to use a VOIP service for your home or business, the VOIP service typically assumes that you already have a stable and reliable highspeed Internet connection. The highspeed Internet connection is REQUIRED for VOIP service, but the VOIP service itself does not include the highspeed Internet.

For home use, that might be cable Internet or it might be residential DSL. But whichever of those it is, note the keywords I used above: stable and reliable. Many residential highspeed Internet connections are neither reliable nor are they stable. If that is the case with your highspeed Internet connection, then you have two choices: (1) get a different highspeed Internet service that DOES provide a stable and reliable connection, or (2) stop shopping for VOIP services, because it will not work well with an unstable and unreliable highspeed Internet connection.

In fact, studies have shown that in more than 95% of the cases where customers have called to complain about the quality of their VOIP services, the problem has been with the highspeed Internet connection, and NOT with the VOIP service.

The reason for this is that VOIP makes and receives phone calls using your highspeed Internet connection. Obviously, if that connection is neither reliable nor stable, your VOIP service and voice quality on that call is going to suffer.

What if your highspeed Internet connection is satellite? A satellite highspeed Internet connection is not recommended for good VOIP service. Most satellite services have a monthly bandwidth limitation, and if you do much calling at all, you will likely exceed that monthly limitation with VOIP quite quickly. But even if you do not do much calling, the lag time to go to the satellite and back, which is referred to as the latency time, is going to make VOIP very difficult, and you will not be happy with it.

Remember I talked about the "reliable" aspect of your highspeed Internet connection? For years and years, you have grown accustomed to hearing a dial tone when you picked up the phone to make a call, and that has been extremely reliable. But if your highspeed Internet connection goes down, so does your ability to make or receive phone calls.

If you do have a reliable and stable highspeed Internet connection, there is no reason not to consider installing VOIP immediately. You can even cancel your existing phone line with the phone company after you get VOIP installed, if you want to. That phone line with the phone company is probably costing you about $25 per month, and that is just for dial tone and maybe local calls, but certainly no extra features like caller ID and clearly no long distance calling.

By comparison, most VOIP service plans allow you to make unlimited amounts of local and long distance calls within the continental US, and some also include Canada and even Puerto Rico. They also typically include extra features at no additional cost, such as voice mail, caller ID, calling waiting, and more. And all that still costs around $25 per month, the same as you were paying for just dial tone with the phone company!

The economics of it are there, and you are probably going to have highspeed Internet anyway, so it's time to check out the possibilities and start talking without worrying about the cost of calling your sister in Seattle and your mother in Denver!

For a long time, wireless cell phones using broadband were the only solution to communicating on the go. But a few years ago, people developed a new way to communicate with their phones and its called VoIP, or voice over internet protocol. Many people may have already heard of Vonage, the company that pioneered the use of VoIP, but these same people may not know what it is and how it works. People also might be wondering why its a lot cheaper than traditional wireless plans.

VoIP is a new revolutionary way to make phone calls, sometimes for free. This new technology allows you to make phone calls through your computer and an internet connection. It uses IP addresses to connect you to whoever youre trying to call. But voIP isnt limited to just computer to computer phone calls. It can also make calls when someone is in reach of any wi-fi hotspot. All you need is a IP phone and a power supply. Of course, with every new technology, there will be up-sides and down-sides.

For example, when you do not have a WI-FI signal, the phone will have no dial tone. Also, emergency calls to 911 will be a problem as well. These IP calls are untraceable so if you are unable to tell the 911 operator where you are, they wont be able to find you.

VoIP wont be a large threat to wireless companies for a decade or two because of these problems. They are not small either and it will take companies like Cingular more than a decade to switch to this cheaper technology. Stay with your expensive wireless company for now.

You might be reluctant to make the investment in a quality mattress, or to spend the time investigating the options. But just think about your investment on a mattress spread out over 15 years, and consider that you do spend one-third of your life in bed. Isnt it worth spending the time and money to make sure your mattress is right for you?

Here, some basic tips to make the most of your investment and help you rest easy with your decision.

Try, Try Again

The only way to find the right mattress for you is to try them for yourself. Take notes on the ones that you like and the ones you dont like, concentrating on factors like firmness or whether or not they have pillow tops. If you discover you like mattresses with pillow tops (also known as summit tops or softest tops), that immediately narrows down your selection to one-third of the mattresses on the market. Bunk beds are a timeless trend, and now theyre especially popular with a desk rather than a second bed underneath the top bunk. Keep in mind before you buy that this type of bed must have a mattress seven inches thick or less.

Beware the Point of No Return

Because of health laws, chances are, you wont be able to return your mattress. (If a store does allow returns on mattresses, it most likely is throwing out the mattresses when theyre returned and compensating for the difference with high markups.) So make sure youre prepared when you shop with measurements of the space where your bed will go and that you dont get swayed to buy a mattress you arent sure is right for you.

One way to avoid a sticky situation: Even if you think that the queen-sized mattress youre bringing home will fit around your houses tight corners, consider a split style just to be on the safe side, especially if theres a possibility the mattress might be used in your next home.

Also, remember that with many manufacturers, stains void the warranty, so put on that mattress pad as soon as you get your mattress home and warn the kids not to drink Kool-Aid in bed.

Buying your new mattress shouldnt result in you tossing and turning as you think about opening your pocketbook and researching all the options. Follow these simple tips, and youll get a good nights sleep after investing in a new mattress.

A recent Tech Tip covered the basics of selecting a computer case and made mention of the various sizes that correspond to motherboards of different form factors. A few people wrote in expressing interest in understanding more about the basics of motherboards, and thats exactly what this Tech Tip intends to address.

A motherboard, also known as a main board, is the primary circuit board inside of a computer, and is where the central processing unit (CPU), memory, expansion slots, drives, and other peripheral devices are connected. The circuitry on a motherboard facilitates the communication between all of the devices in the computer, making them as critical to a systems performance as items such as the CPU or memory.

The core circuitry of a motherboard is referred to as its chipset, and generally the manufacturer of the motherboard is not the manufacturer of the chipset. Intel does produce motherboards with their own chipsets, but buying a motherboard brand such as Gigabyte, Biostar, and ASUS means getting a board with either a VIA, Nvidia, SIS, or Intel brand chipset.

1. Form Factor

The different basic shapes and sizes of motherboards are categorized as form factors. There are several standard form factors available, but some of the more common ones found in desktop computers include: (http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/atx2_2.pdf), ATX (http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/matxspe1.2.pdf), Micro ATX (mATX) (http://www.formfactors.org/developer/specs/FlexATXaddn1_0.pdf) FlexATX (http://www.via.com.tw/en/initiatives/spearhead/mini-itx/) and Mini-ITX

The basic sizes of each are as follows:

* ATX: 12" x 9.6" (305mm x 244mm)

* Micro ATX: 9.6" x 9.6" (244mm x 244mm)

* FlexATX: 9.0" x 7.5" (229mm x 191mm)

* Mini ITX: 6.7" x 6.7" (170mm x 170mm)

ATX and mATX are by far the most popular motherboard sizes for desktop computers, and as seen in the list above, are also some of the largest. More real estate on a motherboard allows for greater expansion possibilities and extra features, which make the use of these boards more flexible. A Mini-ITX board may feature just one slot for memory and one slot for an expansion card, while a typical ATX board may feature 4 memory slots and six slots for expansion cards.

Each form factor has its own niche that it fits into, from workstations and gaming systems for larger boards to media centers and in-car computers for smaller boards. There is definitely overlap between the potential applications of each form factor, and other features and capabilities will also influence the targeted use.

2. CPU Socket

The major processor manufacturers, AMD and Intel, are constantly waging a battle to offer the fastest, most powerful processors available. Getting more speed and performance out of a relatively small chip generally requires a change to the physical dimensions as each new generation of processor is released. Therefore, motherboards need to evolve at the same pace in order to accept the new CPUs.

Back in the day, AMD and Intel processors shared a common CPU socket, but those days were short lived. AMD and Intel have since been traveling down their own, relatively parallel, paths of performance and speed increases, while using different designs. Selecting a motherboard for a modern AMD processor eliminates the use of any Intel processor, and vice versa.

AMDs current offering for desktop processors includes the Athlon 64, which is available in Socket 939 and Socket 754 formats. The number in the names represents the number of pins present on the backside of the CPU that connect to the motherboards socket. The Socket 939 Athlon 64 therefore has a staggering array of nine hundred and thirty nine tiny pins to match up with the motherboards socket. The Chaintech VNF4 Ultra is an example of a Socket 939 motherboard based on Nvidias NForce4 Ultra chipset technology. In addition to these two sockets, many AMD processors, including Athlon XPs, Semprons, and Durons, share the Socket A format, also known as Socket 462 thanks to it having 462 pins for connecting to a motherboard.Socket adapters

Intels latest offering for their Pentium 4 and Celeron processors, LGA 775, doesnt have pins at all and basically swaps the pins to the motherboard for the socket. Perhaps this design move puts the burden of bent pin warranty claims on someone else, but it is fairly unique. The Biostar P4M80-M7 is an example of an LGA 775 motherboard based on the VIA P4M800 chipset. Other Intel processors still on the market utilize the Socket 478 format for Pentium 4 and Celeron processors.

Although most motherboards support just one CPU socket, some applications benefit from having more than one processor to tackle the tasks at hand. Servers and high end workstations are two examples where a dual processor system, such as could be run on the Tyan Thunder i7500 motherboard, might make light work of more advanced applications.

3. Components

Components is a fairly vague term to describe this section, but the items to be covered are fairly diverse. Computer systems all use memory, storage devices, and power supplies, but among the many differences motherboards have is the type and quantity of connections for these components.

Most modern systems use DDR memory, but DDR-2 memory is becoming more common and will eventually become the standard. Although some boards provide slots for both types of memory, it is generally the case that either one or the other technology is supported. Besides operating differently, the physical difference of DDR having 184 pins and DDR-2 having 240 pins prevents them from being interchangeable. Going forward, users will have to decide whether they want to jump on the new technology bandwagon when selecting a motherboard, or to try to continue using their existing DDR for as long as possible. Regardless of technology, most motherboards come with 2 to 4 slots for memory, although as mentioned, Mini-ITX boards may just offer 1 slot.

Hard drive technology is changing too, as mentioned in the Tech Tip comparing SATA to ATA hard drives. Most motherboards over the past few years have offered two ATA connections, which could support up to 4 drives. With SATA becoming more popular, some boards now offer a mix of ATA and SATA connections, while others have abandoned ATA all together, and instead offer multiple SATA connections which only support one drive each. In addition to type and quantity, motherboards can also offer choices in hard drive capabilities by integrating RAID controllers onboard, as found on the ASUS K8V SE Deluxe.

As systems become more advanced, they many times impose special power requirements to keep them running smoothly. Most motherboards feature the typical 20 pin ATX power connector, while some server boards may have a 24 pin connection in its place. Motherboards for AMD Athlon 64 and Pentium 4 processors will have a second power connection located in close proximity to the CPU socket for providing the extra power that todays high end processors demand. This special 4 pin connection isnt found on every AMD Socket A motherboard, but it will most definitely be located on an AMD Socket 939 motherboard. Power supplies have been including this special connection for years, but for those upgrading an old system with a new motherboard, the power supply may be just one more item that has to be upgraded as well.

4. Extra Features

Many motherboards now include features onboard that were once only available as expansion cards to be purchased separately. A typical motherboard will now include stereo sound capabilities, a 10/100 LAN connection, and a few USB 2.0 ports on the back panel connection. Depending on the budget and needs of the end user, many motherboards may also include other convenient features such as integrated Firewire ports, VGA connections, and onboard RAID controllers.

Motherboards Extra Features

Although many of these items may be added later with expansion cards, if you know you want them upfront, a bit of installation hassle and expense can be eliminated by finding a board with just about everything you want included. That said, there arent many choices of onboard components, so its a case of take it or leave it. For example, you may want stereo sound included, but find most motherboards offer 5 channel, where you would prefer 8 channel. In that case, it may be a good thing that motherboards include expansion slots to add the sound card of your choice.

5. Expansion Slots

A motherboard typically provides at least one slot for the installation of a graphics card and a few slots for expanding the capabilities of the system in other areas.

Graphics cards are available in PCI, AGP, and now PCI Express formats, and matching a motherboard to the appropriate card is a key step. Most motherboards released over the past few years include an AGP slot, and the new wave of motherboards are now starting to feature PCI Express slots for graphics card installation.

PCI slots are found on most motherboards, but are much slower than AGP and PCI Express slots, so they are not the optimal choice for graphics. ATX motherboards may typically feature four to five PCI slots, and although they could be used for secondary display graphics cards, more common applications include sound cards, network cards, RAID controllers, TV tuners, modems, and USB/Firewire controllers. Considering that many of these items are now included onboard, having multiple PCI slots isnt quite as important as it used to be.

6. Style

With enthusiasts adding windows and special lighting effects to just about every feature of a computer, why should the motherboard be left out of the action? Long gone are the days of the stereotypical green PCB with white connectors, and now most boards feature a vibrantly colored PCB and a rainbow of colors on expansion slots, memory slots, drive connectors, and so on.

For example, if someone was undecided on a mATX board for their Socket 754 AMD Athlon 64, style might be the deciding factor. The Chaintech MK8M800 and the Biostar K8VGA-M-N are similar boards featuring the VIA K8M800 chipset and prices under $70. The golden PCB with black and white features of the Chaintech board may appeal to some, while the red, white, blue, and yellow of the Biostar may sway others.

In general, a particular model is only available in one color scheme, and many manufacturers use the same theme across their entire current line up. As an example, the Biostar board for AMD Athlon 64 processors above features the same basic style as this Biostar board for the new Pentium LGA 775 processors. In addition to coloring, some manufacturers will include LED lighting on chipset cooling fans, or accessorize motherboards with matching cables to complete the unique looks of the board.

Some people may scoff at colors being included in the list of key features on motherboards, but there will be some that shop for style first, and then performance.

Final Words

There are many factors to address in selecting a motherboard, and this Tech Tip really just scratched the surface of the basic choices that may need to be considered. Much more technical decisions may need to be made by the advanced user, but covering the six basic areas discussed above is a good start for users of any level.

How to Put Movies On Your PSP

Have you been pulling your hair out trying to put movies on your PSP? Many folks know it can be done but are confused on how to do it.

I am going to give you my quick and easy recipe for putting movies and video on your PSP. There are only a few steps and it is a cinch on you know how.

First like any recipe...You have your ingredients:

512 MB Pro Duo Stick (This is what holds your movie files (MP4)

DVD Player installed in your computer

DVD Ripper (This pulls the movie from the DVD to your computer)

PSP Video Converter (converts movie and video files to MP4 format that you watch on your PSP.)

(Note: There is software that has both the DVD Ripper and Converter combined)

USB Cable

1. Load your DVD and fire up your DVD ripper, select the movie or video you want to put on your PSP and hit the "extract" or "rip" button. Tell it where you want to save the file to.

2. If you already have movie and/or video files on your pc then all you need to do is hit "add" from your DVD ripper and tell it where you want to save the file to.

3. Select the file that you saved to your computer and hit the "extract and/or encode" button from your PSP video converter and save that file.

3. If you have DVD Ripper/PSP Video converter combo software...You can combine steps 1,2 and 3.

At this point you have the files on your PC...and they are in the correct format.

4. How to download or transfer your movies to PSP? Just connect your PSP with your PC with the USB cable, and create a folder on your Memory Stick called "MP_ROOT." and create a sub-folder called "100MNV01." under it. Copy your MP4 files to this location (no need to copy the .HTM files).

5. Now on your PSP go to video and memory stick and watch your movie!

That's it. It is real simple to put movies on your PSP!

Leather wristbands & bracelets started to come into popularity about 3 or 4 years ago. Celebrities started to wear them. Slowly, the general population started to wear them a little. Soon, they become no longer an accessory that was gothic or extreme, the more conservative leather wristbands and bracelets were becoming common among people with many different fashion tastes.

Leather cuff watches are a related accessory to leather wristbands. Cuff watches are leather band watches with wide leather bands, usually about 1.5-3 inches wide. About 3 years ago, there were about 100 cuff watches available for sale on ebay. As their popularity increased over the last 3 years, there are now over 3500 cuff watches available for sale on ebay.

Leather wristbands, cuffs and cuff watch bands have become a fashion necessity these days. Nowadays, there are many celebrities with all kinds of different fashion tastes who wear them. Leather bands is an accessory that has gone from having an extreme or punk stigma, to being completely necessary to mainstream fashion.

Leather wrist accessories are no longer popular with just men. Women are wearing them almost as much as the men now. There are women's leather cuff watches and leather bracelets available in most clothing stores now.

There are many different kinds of leather bands available in stores now. For women, colored leather or suede bracelets and watch bands are popular. For men, it is popular for the bands to be a little wider, 2 inches or more. With a leather wristband or cuff watch band, it is popular now for the band to have a lot of texture, layers of leather, stitching or weaving.

Also, it has become quite popular for people to have their initials, name or a phrase engraved into the leather. There are many places available online that can do that now.

Three years ago, leather wrist accessories became available online with a much better selection than what was available in most retail stores. The retail stores had quite a delay before they figured out what people really wanted in a leather band.

I spotted the leather wristband and cuff trend about 3 years ago and could see the online selections keeping pace with the demand, but it took about another year or two before the retail stores started to come out with what the customers were really looking for in a leather band. In my opinion, most retail stores are still working on figuring out what is popular. I don't think they have quite figured it out yet. I think the selection for leather bands is much better online than what is available in retail stores.

I see this leather wristband, cuff and cuff watch band trend as being one that will not die anytime soon. I see the styles evolving and changing, even now. I think the styles will continue to change over the years, but, I think the popularity of leather wristbands & wide leather cuffs is here to stay, at least for the next decade or two.

Business etiquette is fundamentally concerned with building relationships founded upon courtesy and politeness between business personnel. Etiquette, and especially business etiquette, is a means of maximising your potential by presenting yourself positively.

Writing a business letter is not simply a matter of expressing your ideas clearly. The way you write a letter and the etiquette you employ may have a significant impact on your success or failure in business.

Failure to observe correct business letter etiquette can result in you adopting an inappropriate tone, causing offense or misunderstandings, lack of clarity or purpose and hostility or soured relations.

The foundation of good business letter etiquette is Think before you write. You should be considering who the letter is addressed to, how and why? This will then influence style, content and structure.

Here we cover some of the main issues relating to good business letter etiquette:

Addressing the Letter

Always make sure you have spelt the recipients name correctly. It may sound simple, but you would be surprised at how many people fail to do so. The recipients name should include titles, honours or qualifications if deemed necessary.

Many people use the Dear Sir/Yours Faithfully formula when addressing the receiver. Although this is acceptable for routine matters it is impersonal and should not be used when dealing with those you know, queries or complaints. With these the Dear Mr./Yours Sincerely formula should be adopted.

Once a certain level of familiarity is reached it is not considered bad etiquette to use phrases such as Kind Regards or All the best at the end of the letter.

Confidentiality

If the content of the letter is sensitive, personal or confidential it must be marked appropriately. Marking the letter confidential will suffice in highlighting this fact. If you only want the letter read by the receiver without the interception of a secretary or PA, mark it as Private, Personal or Strictly Confidential. If you have received such a business letter it is good etiquette to reciprocate and ensure that all future correspondence is kept at that level of confidentiality.

Style

Proper business letter etiquette requires that a consistent and clear approach, combined with courtesy, be employed. As a rule of thumb, aim to keep all business letters formal in style.
